No prosperity without democracy: Speaker

The country’s freedom and prosperity are not possible without a strong democratic system Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has said that.
“Sustainable economic progress depends on establishing a firm and effective democratic structure in the country,” he told the media today (April 16) at Barishal Circuit House.
Highlighting public engagement, Hafiz Uddin noted that people are now more interested in politics than in studies or sports, adding that political awareness played a key role in achieving independence.
He said that whenever autocracy suppresses people, it is the students and youth who take to the streets, resist oppression, and help restore democracy.
Referring to recent political developments, the Speaker described the mass movement that ended what he termed a prolonged period of dictatorship as a “glorious chapter” in the nation’s history.
He expressed hope that democracy in Bangladesh would be further strengthened, enabling greater economic advancement.
Earlier, upon his arrival, the Speaker was given a guard of honour at Barishal Circuit House. He later left for his home district, Bhola.
