For the second time in a week, Russian President Vladimir Putin has held a telephone conversation with Iran’s leader, positioning himself as an international mediator as US and Israeli strikes continue in the region.

Putin is calling for a "swift de-escalation and political resolution" in Iran, even while Russia continues its military operations in Ukraine. Moscow maintains a "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership" with Tehran, reaffirmed recently, though it does not extend to a mutual defense treaty. Instead, Russia is offering mediation to enhance its diplomatic profile.

In a recent call with US President Donald Trump, Putin reportedly discussed avenues for a diplomatic solution, including contacts with Gulf leaders and other nations. For Moscow, this is an opportunity to boost influence in the Middle East and maintain constructive ties with Washington—ties seen as beneficial for its war strategy in Ukraine.

Economic incentives also play a role. Rising global oil prices have significantly strengthened Russian government revenues, aiding continued military spending in Ukraine. Russia’s federal budget is balanced on an oil price of $59 per barrel, while recent spikes have pushed crude close to $120, easing financial pressure. US suggestions to relax oil sanctions on certain countries could further benefit Russia, a move criticized by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky as a serious blow.

Russian media has highlighted both optimism and criticism. Pro-Kremlin outlets note that high oil prices could pressure the West to ease sanctions, while some tabloids openly mocked Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict.

In essence, while publicly calling for calm in Iran, Moscow is strategically leveraging the situation for both diplomatic clout and economic advantage.
